Our Story

The Wisconsin Active Communities Alliance started as a small group of coalition coordinators, health planners and bike/ped advocates from across the state of Wisconsin who knew there was a better way for us to work together and communicate. We knew it was just too hard for people to walk and bike from “point A to point B” in our local communities. We also knew there were a lot of great things going on in the state that were trying to make it easier for people to move about their community in a more physically active way. So eight of us got together, formed the Statewide Active Communities Team, went through a year-long training with the Healthy Wisconsin Leadership Institute and now here we are!

If you’re a part of a group that is working on the same stuff identified with WACA, you’re in! Make it known that you’re on the same path as we are.

Our goals are simple.

  1. Work together across the state on a few key things that will help make local communities Active Communities.
  2. Encourage local groups to work together so health, transportation, planning, zoning, economic development, parks and recreation, schools and others share a common mission.
  3. Facilitate relationship-building between communities in order to learn from each other and not “reinvent the wheel.”
  4. Provide a common set of resources, guidance/framework and tools that communities can use in their efforts to become Active Communities.
